Sorensco Baseball provides competitive recreation league and travel baseball for youth ages 13-18. Sorensco is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization that has been serving the communities of East Greenbush and Schodack, as well as southern Rensselaer and northern Columbia counties since 1954. In recent years, while most leagues in the area have been shrinking and dropping their rec baseball programs, Sorensco has expanded rapidly: in 2018, our league had just two rec teams and three summer travel teams at the 15U, 14U and 13U levels. Since then, the league has expanded to as many as eight spring recreation teams and seven summer travel teams. Thus, the league now offers competitive, affordable, community-based baseball to over 100 families in our region.

Currently, our league’s most pressing need is to upgrade our field lighting system. In 2023 and 2024, Sorensco hosted an average of 111 night games, and this does not include evening practices in the early spring and late fall. With such a large number of night games, our field lighting is mission critical to our league’s success. The current lighting was installed in 1996, many of the bulbs have burned out (and are expensive to replace), and the illumination of the field is subpar, which creates safety and playability issues. Upgrade to Sorensco’s lighting would have myriad benefits. The new LED system the league plans to purchase will cover more of the field with enhanced lighting, which will greatly increase safety and playability. Additionally, the lighting is more efficient, supports environmental sustainability and places less demand on the grid. The new system will be more focused and emit less light spillage, providing a benefit to the surrounding neighborhoods. And the new system will signal Sorensco’s commitment to the community and ensure that our league can continue to provide a high-quality baseball experience for the next generation.
